This Is Why I Came

this is whyAlumna Mary Rakow blends fable and theology in her new novel, This Is Why I Came (Counterpoint, 2015). The novel offers readers biblical stories reimagined by Bernadette, a lapsed Catholic who comes back to church on Good Friday after a 30-year absence. Oprah Magazine dubbed This Is Why I Came one of “16 Books To Start 2016 Right.” Rakow’s previous novel, The Memory Room, was shortlisted for the Stanford University Libraries International Saroyan Prize in Literature, a PEN USA/West Finalist in Fiction and was listed among the Best Books of the West by The Los Angeles Times. 1. Thank you so much for this mention and for the links to some of the reviews!
On another note: I’d love to read from the novel at BC if that were ever of interest. I have no readings yet scheduled in the Boston/Cambridge area and it would be a real treat for me. I learn a great deal from readers and have found that the readings generate lively discourse afterward, across a wide belief/disbelief spectrum, all in good will, and this pleases me very, very much. Here’s a video of my reading in early January in Manhattan Beach, CA just for fun. And thank you!

My very best to you and to the work you do here,
    Mary Rakow
