On February 23, Boston College will host Shannon Vallor, an expert on the ethics of AI and the author of The AI Mirror: How to Reclaim our Humanity in an Age of Machine Thinking, who will present a lecture on “De-coding Our Humanity: A Reflection on Immanent and Intimate Technologies.” Vallor, who earned a Ph.D. from BC in 2001, is the Baillie Gifford Chair in the Ethics of Data and Artificial Intelligence at the Edinburgh Futures Institute at University of Edinburgh. Her research explores how new technologies, especially AI, robotics, and data science, reshape human moral character, habits, and practices. Her work includes advising policymakers and industry on the ethical design and use of AI. Vallor is also the author of Technology and the Virtues: A Philosophical Guide to a Future Worth Wanting. Her talk, cosponsored by the Philosophy Department and the Institute for the Liberal Arts, will take place at 4 p.m. in Devlin 101.
