‘God’s Little Flowers’

Lindsay Winget Schlegel, a 2008 Boston College graduate, is the author of a picture book inspired by a quotation attributed to St. Thérèse of Lisieux. God’s Little Flowers (OSV Kids, 2025) looks to counter the culture of comparison and encourage young readers to recognize the gifts God has given them, even when they may be hard to to see at first. In Schlegel’s story, Gemma is discouraged because all her friends seem to have more impressive talents than she does, and she can’t figure out what makes her special. Gemma’s mom takes her and her sisters to the botanical gardens. The marvelous flowers—all so different but all so wonderful—help Gemma see that God bestowed each person with their own special gifts, which are to be shared with others.
