Professor of English Min Hyoung Songcontributed a story to the new volume Asian Americans in Michigan: Voices from the Midwest (Wayne State University Press, 2015). The 41 contributors, who trace their heritage to East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, explore their experiences, culture and heritage. The accounts in the collection come from a range of perspectives, including first-generation immigrants, those born in the United States, and third- and fourth-generation Americans of Asian heritage. Song said writing about growing up in Detroit in the 1970s and ’80s allowed him to reflect on how much his growing up was affected by a history that he couldn’t know in full but that nevertheless profoundly shaped his experiences.
